Bowling [47th day]

Hello. It's Illinois Panda. 

I join the first weekly meeting of GLOBE today. GLOBE is an organization composed of American students and international students and aims to promote cultural interaction. It has roughly a hundred members. We are divided into groups of 7 or so, and hold a meeting each week. As the first meeting, we enjoyed bowling at Illini Union tonight. There is a bowling center on campus, and we can enjoy it with not more than about 5 bucks. My team is made up of two Americans and 5 international students, all of who except me are freshmen. Since they have totally different backgrounds, talking with them helps me to broaden my horizons. We introduced ourselves and asked many personal questions to each other. The questions didn't necessarily contain cultural characters, but the mere answers to normal questions were sometimes interesting and unexpected due to the big difference in cultures between countries. I also re-found the popularity of Japanese culture, especially anime and manga. One guy from China is a big fan of anime, and he covers a lot of Japanese anime. I was surprised by the fact he knows "Inazma Eleven", which is a very popular soccer anime. It's not too much to say it is my soul of my child-food. We talked about our favorite characters and heated up like to say "Goenji is so cool. Fire-Torunade!", "Kabeyama is named after a wall just because he's big", or "Kido used to be a captain of the enemy team, didn't he?". I can say that that moment was the most exciting since I came to the U.S., lol.

「謙遜」… へりくだること。控え目なつつましい態度でふるまうこと。

よく言われる日本人の悪いくせですね。日本の中で生きていくには大事なコミュニケーションsきるの一つなのですが、アメリカでは「謙遜」≒「自信がない」と捉えられます。そんなことは分かっていたのですが、やっぱりついつい謙遜してしまうんですよね、そして周りにちょっと可哀想な目で見られてすぐに後悔します。今日もやってしまいました。僕は日本で東大に通っているのですが、アジア（特に中国、韓国、インド）出身の人に出身大学を聞かれて、東大だと答えると、目を丸くして「日本で一番の大学でしょ、もちろん知ってるよ、えぐいね」と言って、とてもリスペクトしてくれます（戦後日本の発展のおかげ）。それをニコニコして受け取ればいいのしょうが、ついつい "It's not so good." とか、つまらない謙遜をして周りになんでって顔されます。これは確実に僕が誤った考えを抱いてます。自分の通う大学に誇りを感じて、しかもそれに堂々としていられないのは情けないですよね。むしろ蔑むなんてもってのほか。自分が身を置く環境を否定することは究極的には自己否定につながります。しかしそれを美德と曲解するのはあまりにも馬鹿げています。日本人の美徳の一つに慎しさがありますが、慎しさとは決して自分や自分の環境を否定することではありません。自己否定につながる謙遜を美徳と考えるのは美的センスに欠けます。だからつまり何を言いたいかというと、イリノイ大Tシャツを3枚も持っているのに東大グッズを一つも持っていないのはおかしい。東大ごめんね！帰ったら UTokyoパーカー買うからね！でも1万円は高いから値下げしといてね！ということです！！！ ごめんなさい、眠すぎて適当に書き過ぎました笑 おやすみなさい。Byebye.
